The Beginning
30 years ago, Billy Mitchell and family, inspired by their Christian faith, got involved with the youth in their Waimea community. While working with the youth, they saw the need for the health and healing of the whole family. So along with a weekly youth meeting they also began a weekly adult support group and Bible Study in their home. This group was centered on Christian beliefs and principles.
During this time, Kahu (pastor) Billy was a leader in New Hope Christian Fellowship under Pastor Wayne Cordeiro. In 1991, Kahu was released by Pastor Cordeiro to start an independent Christian church and informal Sunday worship services began in his home. The church was formalized in 1996 with the incorporation of Mana Christian Ohana. In July of 2003, the church was recognized by the IRS as a tax exempt organization and received 501(c)(3) status. In 2004, our church services moved from the Mitchell’s home to the Kahilu Theatre in town. Besides Sunday service and Sunday school, we have the following ministries: Children & Youth, Men, Women, Praise & Worship, Hula, Kokua, and Bible Studies. The church has grown to approximately 400 members.
With God’s leading and prayer, we purchased the Kahilu Town Hall, across from the Kahilu Theatre, in March of 2010. We took this leap of faith and seized the opportunity to keep this valuable resource for the community and established our church home. As of July 2012, the hall was fully renovated and functioning as our church and available for community use and rental. We have since added an annex to accommodate our office, meeting rooms for ministries and community use.
